PLAYTEST OUR NEW EXECUTIVE BRANCH SIMULATION

How will your class navigate history?

In the Executive Branch simulations, students take on the roles of the President and the President's advisors during a historical crisis. Advisors—lawyers, military officials, political strategists—each bring their own perspective and solutions to the situation. The class must work together to weigh the options and decide on a course of action. Their choices shape what happens next.

HOW THE EXECUTIVE BRANCH SIMULATION WORKS

Students make decisions and see the outcomes of their choices played out over three rounds.  Each round includes:

  • Briefing — Students learn about the crisis and are assigned roles as the President or advisors from different departments.

  • Analysis — Advisor groups review the situation from their perspective and develop recommendations.

  • Debate — Advisors present their recommendations to the President. The class discusses the tradeoffs.

  • Decision — The President decides on a course of action.

  • Consequences — Students see the results of their decision and face the next phase of the crisis.

At the end of the simulation, the class is presented with a breakdown of what actually happened and prompts to compare and contrast history with their decisions.
